Welcome!
Hello from Mr. Leasure
Welcome to fifth grade. I am looking forward to a wonderful and productive school year. Students will be setting many goals for themselves and will be working very hard to achieve them. I urge students to develop good organizational skills, independence, and responsibility. I anticipate a great year and am eager to begin constructing our learning community.
A brief introductory: I have been teaching in the Bay City Public Schools for 21 years. This is my 13th consecutive year teaching at Auburn, and this year will be my 10th year teaching fifth grade. I have a 18 year old daughter (Olivia) and an 13 year old daughter (Hailey). My wife Nichole works in the district as a speech therapist. I received my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Central Michigan University and a master's degree in Instructional Technology from Saginaw Valley State University. I love to hunt, fish, and golf.

Our Classroom
Our classroom is the "GT Cluster" classroom in fifth grade. This simply means that some students are part of the gifted and talented program and some students are general education students. Differentiated instruction will be a priority for all learners. Strengths/weaknesses will be assessed throughout the year and students will be challenged to grow in all areas.
I will be collaborating with the other 5th grade teachers (Mr. Kyro & Mrs. Marotzke) for team teaching. I will be teaching Language Arts and Science to our homeroom. Students will be switching this year; they will have Mrs. Marotzke for Social Studies and Mr. Kyro for Math.
Classwork and Instruction
We will all work together to build a learning community within the classroom that facilitates learning. Whole group and cooperative learning structures will be used to engage all students. We will have open discussions before, during, and after lessons to support one another and to make connections to real life. Staying focused and engaged will be an overall goal so we can learn the objectives of each lesson. We will hold each other accountable, ask questions when necessary, help others, and complete all work/tasks. Homework may be necessary on a daily basis but is not meant to be overwhelming. *If you are spending more than 30 minutes on homework.....just stop and see Mr. Leasure for help the next day.
Savings Book
Each student will have a "Savings Book" they will use to purchase items at auctions held throughout the year. "Money" can be earned by performing a good deed, a classroom success, or being responsible. Money can also be taken away for lack of responsibility and classroom interference.
Grades
Letter grades will be seen in the gradebook for 5th Grade. Rubrics will be used for projects and activities. All classwork, projects, quizzes, and tests will be weighted and scored using percentages. Scores will be recorded into Skyward for family access. Please use Skyward to view grades and make sure you have your most current information updated there. If you have any questions about access to Skyward you can contact the school office for help.
Folders
Students will be given a folder to use as their organizational tool. They will use it daily to transport homework, notes, etc. to and from school.
Absences
Daily work will be posted to Google Classroom. It is the student's responsibility to complete all absent work and have it turned in on time. (One day for every absence) There is no need to make special arrangements to have anything picked up unless a student is gone for consecutive days.

S.A.M.
S.A.M. (Students Achieve More) is a 30 minute session where students will go to one of the fifth grade teachers for focused instruction. As teachers reflect on student success and assessment results, they will determine the need for enrichment or intervention for groups of students. These focus groups will change and evolve on a weekly basis depending on how students achieve.
